St. Augustine of Hippo’s commentary,
Our Lord's Sermon on the Mount (De sermone Domini in monte),
is a two-volume theological work written between 393 and 396 AD.
Augustine considers Jesus’ discourse in Matthew 5–7 to be the "perfect standard of the Christian life".
Volume I (Matthew 5): Focuses on whether it is humanly possible to practice the Beatitudes. Augustine interprets these blessings as a "stairway to heaven," moving from the foundational virtue of humility (poverty of spirit) up to the highest end of wisdom.
Volume II (Matthew 6–7): Provides a condensed theology of prayer, including an in-depth analysis of the Lord's Prayer and ethical teachings on charity and righteousness.
